Pronouns: she/her/hers
Email: Christel.adhemar28@myhunter.cuny.edu
Christel joined our team as a volunteer in October 2020. She started by attending dissemination meetings, which helped her better understand how minority men who have sex with men are disproportionally affected by HIV. In November 2020, Dr. Tyrel Starks offered Christel a Research Assistant position at his lab.
Christel was hired during an unprecedented time at the Relationship Health Research Team. She assists on two studies, PARTNER and ATN We Test. She was trained extensively to screen and schedule participants for virtual appointments. For PARTNER, she delivers psychoeducation content related to substance use and HIV risk management. For ATN We Test, she guides participants through collecting biological samples to test for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Before her position at the lab, Christel worked with nonprofit organizations that aimed to combat institutional issues through advocacy, peer leadership, and social justice.
While Christel is pursuing a B.A. at Hunter College, CUNY, she is interested in working with marginalized communities. At the lab, she continues to deepen this interest by exposing projects that recognize and create action plans to minimize plights within these sub-groups.
Outside of her work environment, Christel conducts weekly sessions with high-school girls from Black and Brown communities to discuss sensitive topics and create a safe space during this unprecedented time. It is extremely important to Christel to engage in research that analyzes the origins of issues that affect underserved communities. With the knowledge that she will attain, Christel can improve the lives of those historically put at a disadvantage.
